Montana Crackle Effect is a spray paint with a built-in crackle. You spray it over a base coat, and as it dries, it splits into a web of fine cracks that let the colour underneath show through. The result looks like old, weathered paint, the kind you’d normally wait decades to see on an antique door or a piece of vintage furniture.

Every piece comes out differently, because the cracks form on their own. How to use

1. Clean and prepare the surface, and make sure it’s dry and free of dust and grease.
2. Apply a base coat of Montana GOLD (recommended) or Montana WHITE. The thicker the base coat, the stronger the crackle effect.
3. Let the base coat dry for at least 45 minutes, but no more than 24 hours. Drying time changes with temperature, humidity, and how thick the coat is.
4. Shake the can well, then apply the Crackle Effect in an even, generous coat over the base.
5. The cracking begins as the paint dries, and the pattern appears on its own.
6. Leave the piece to dry and cure fully, which takes around 24 hours.
7. If you want to add more colour, you can paint over the cured crackle with Montana GOLD, Montana BLACK, Montana WHITE, Montana ACRYLIC markers, or ordinary acrylic paint.

Tips for better results

1. Test on a spare piece first, since the crackle depends on your base coat, the thickness, the timing, and the weather.
2. A contrasting base colour makes the cracks stand out. A gold base under a dark crackle, or a white base under a coloured crackle, looks striking.
3. For bigger cracks, apply a thicker coat. For finer cracks, apply a thinner coat.
4. Apply the crackle in a single, even pass without going back over it, since overworking can spoil the pattern.
5. Work in a well-ventilated space, and protect the surrounding area from overspray.
6. After use, turn the can upside down and spray briefly until it runs clear, to keep the nozzle from clogging.
7. Keep the can away from heat, and store it upright in a cool place.
